GROUND ITALIAN VENISON PIZZAS
By Pat Kolbe, BUCK FEVER OUTDOORS
Who doesn’t love pizza? Who wouldn’t want to have fun creating your own mini pita pizzas using ground Italian venison and other toppings? A great way to get your kids to enjoy some great tasting venison while also getting them involved in the process and fun of cooking - these Ground Italian Venison Pizzas are sure to be a family hit! I love the flavor of italian ground venison and each year I make a point to ground roughly a 75%/25% venison/pork mixture with Italian sausage seasoning, and then package them in 1 lb tubes. Its fantastic in your typical Italian staples like spaghetti, lasagna and other pasta dishes - and obviously great as this main ingredient as a pizza topping! Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS
½ to 1 lb of Ground Italian Venison
1 package of Greek Pita Bread
1 bottle of Squeezable Pizza Sauce (easy for the kids to use!)
1 package of Hormel Canadian Bacon slices
1 package of Hormel Pepperoni slices
1 onion, chopped into small pieces
1 jar of canned mushrooms, drained
1 package of Mozzarella cheese
1 package of Colby-Jack cheese
Pizza Topper Seasoning (optional)
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Add a small amount of oil to a pan and brown your ground italian venison. If you do not have pre-packaged italian flavored ground venison, it would be simple enough to use regular ground venison and use an italian dressing seasoning packet
Remove venison from stove and let it cool slightly
Assemble all of your other pizza topping ingredients in bowls so it creates an easy grab-and-go station for each person to come by and create their pizza
Using a large pan, assemble as many pita breads as needed on the pan
Squeeze pizza sauce onto each pita and spread evenly around with a spoon
Have each person add their desired toppings to each pizza!
I like to add ground italian venison as the base layer, then top with both cheeses, and finally adding additional toppings such as onions and mushrooms on top of that!
Bake pizzas in the oven for approximately 10 minutes or until all of the cheese is melted!
Slide pizzas onto individual plates for each to enjoy!
