 ITALIAN VENISON PIZZA JOES

By Pat Kolbe, BUCK FEVER OUTDOORS

Here’s a fun take on the traditional ‘sloppy joes’! By combining ground italian venison with some pizza sauce and toppings, you can create delicious Pizza Joes that the whole family will love!  I love the flavor of italian ground venison and each year I make a point to ground roughly a 75%/25% venison/pork mixture with Italian sausage seasoning, and then package them in 1 lb tubes. The Italian flavor really comes out in these Pizza Joes! I also like this recipe for the fact that each individual can add their own touch of flavor to their Pizza Joe by either keeping it basic or adding additional toppings like pepperoni or canadian bacon, or using different cheeses! It’s great and easy for Deer Camp or at home with the family and your kids! Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb of Ground Italian Venison

  • 1 can Petite Diced Tomatoes

  • 1 bottle of Squeezable Pizza Sauce

  • 1 package of Hormel Canadian Bacon slices

  • 1 package of Hormel Pepperoni slices

  • 1 stick of softened butter

  • Garlic Salt

  • 1 package of Colby-Jack  or Mozzarella cheese

  • 1 package of Hamburger buns

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  • Add a small amount of oil to a pan and brown your ground italian venison. If you do not have pre-packaged italian flavored ground venison, it would be simple enough to use regular ground venison and use an italian dressing seasoning packet

  • Add a can of Rotel Tomatoes and 1 cup of Pizza sauce to the ground venison. Stir and mix. Reduce heat to low and let cook for a few minutes, then remove from heat.

  • Spread base of buns on a cooking sheet. Take the top half of the bun and spread with butter and sprinkle with Garlic salt.

  • Top each bottom half of the bun with ground italian mixture.

  • Add desired toppings of pepperonis or canadian bacon slices to each Pizza Joe.

  • Top with shredded cheese.

  • Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until all cheese is melted!
