 VENISON STEAK STROGANOFF

By Pat Kolbe, BUCK FEVER OUTDOORS

It’s strange how we sometimes find certain foods or meals that provide comfort and that extra-satisfying taste during the colder months of the year. This Venison Steak Stroganoff recipe is one of those. Must be something about the thick gravy mixture that warms you up and leaves you feeling full to the point where it’s time to just sit down and hit the couch to watch some football, read a book, or page through the latest hunting magazine!

Extra hearty and full of flavor, this recipe is really easy and doesn’t take much in terms of preparation when you use the pre-sliced mushrooms and jar of gravy! It’s best to thinly slice the venison during the thawing process when it's still slightly frozen - just throw those slices in a plastic bag and store in the fridge until you are ready to cook! Enjoy this simple take on a classic recipe using some venison backstrap!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1-1.5 lbs of Thinly Sliced Venison Steak

  • 1 medium/large Onion sliced

  • 1-2 cans of Heinz Homestyle Mushroom Gravy

  • 8 oz of Sliced Baby Bella Mushrooms

  • 1 12oz bag of Extra Wide Egg Noodles

  • 3-4 Dollops of Sour Cream

  • 2-3 Tbsp Olive Oil

  • Montreal Steak Seasoning (use amounts to preferred taste)

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Cook Extra Wide Egg Noodles per instructions on bag, tossing in butter when complete

  • Preheat deep sided fry pan on stovetop, then add Olive Oil

  • Add Venison,  season to taste with Montreal Steak Seasoning, can cook to brown both sides

  • Remove Venison from pan and set aside in a dish - but do not drain pan

  • Add onions and mushrooms to pan, adding extra olive oil if needed, and season to taste with Montreal Steak Seasoning, cook until caramelized

  • Re-add venison to the pan, along with 1 (thick) or 2 (thin sauce) cans of Heinz Mushroom Gravy

  • Add 3-4 healthy dollops of Sour Cream, and stir so mixture is consistent

  • Plate out a helping of Egg Noodles and top with scoops of Venison Stroganoff Mixture!

    Enjoy!
